Namaste Care is a holistic approach designed to maximize the quality of life for people living with Alzheimer’s and other cognitive impairments. The word Namaste is a Hindu word that means “to honor the spirit within” (Namaste Care, 2013).
I first heard of the word Namaste, while attempting to learn yoga. Now, I have to be completely candid here. There was nothing honorable about me in a yoga class, in fact I brought shame to myself and the others who were serious about this class. I did us all a favor, I respectfully did not return. Lesson learned, I am no yoga connoisseur, nor am I Hindu.
What I did appreciate from the class was the spiritual meaning of the word Namaste. It is two individuals connecting free from the bonds of ego. If it is done with deep feeling in the heart and with the mind surrendered, a deep union of hearts can blossom.
Namaste programming is being utilized in facilities all over the world. I love the philosophy of Joyce Simard, the founder of the Namaste Care, “…is a program where residents receive meaningful activities through a ‘loving touch’ approach” (Namaste Care, 2013).
At Independent Adult Day Care Centers, our objective is to love and honor the spirit of every Guest and Caregiver that we care for. Through meaningful engagement of activities and compassionate nursing care we can enhance their quality of life. Our Centers are designed to radiate light throughout the building, music and aroma therapy saturates the atmosphere, hand massages, and restorative therapies are just a few of the therapy programs we offer. Our Guests have their appetite stimulated through nutritious heart and brain healthy meals. And, our Guests who are no longer able to engage in activities, or voice their feelings are touched physically throughout the day in our Namaste Care room. Lastly, we offer support and education for our Caregivers on the many ways that holistic care can be at the forefront of all we do.
The honor in Independent Adult Day Care Centers, wants to honor the spirit in you.
